Cuándo & Dónde
When & Where
“Being oneself is, always, becoming that other that we are and that we carry hidden inside us, more than anything as a promise or possibility of being.” -Octavio Paz
I believe that consistency within ourselves is nonexistent; part of our human nature is to change and grow throughout our lives physically and mentally. However, I also believe that we all have a core within us that distinguishes us and remains unchangeable; this core is and will always be the form of our true self. My work as an artist is centered on exploring beyond my superficial and ephemeral self to find my core – who I have always been and where it is leading me. To do so, I research aspects of my life and of my Mexican heritage that have inspired my creative process such as my family history, Mexican crafts, and colonial and contemporary Mexican architecture.
I combine different processes like furniture making, welding, and weaving to create seating pieces and lamps. The woven elements portray the core of who I am because of the relationship between my family and textile arts. In addition, furniture has become my most recent passion which I seek to continue exploring. Incorporating weavings into furniture pieces is the pinnacle of my undergraduate body of work. Being able to explore and learn who I am and where my skills and passions are leading me in the future is the foundation of my journey in life.
